Triple C
Triple C is a product made by Vetafarm Pty Ltd.
Triple C is named from its active ingredient: Chlortetracycline Hydrochloride.
It
is a broad-spectrum antibiotic powder for use in ornamental birds for bacterial
infections including E.coli (Enteritis),
Mycoplasma (Chronic Respiratory Disease) and Chlamydia (Psittacosis). Not to
be used for birds intended for human consumption. Triple C in not effective against viruses
although there may be cases where it can be helpful against bacterial secondary
infections following a virus disease.
Some
breeders have found it to be a very fast and effective product for treating
respiratory disease.
It is added to the drinking water or the food
of birds, at the recommended rate. The
drinking containers should be clean before using this product.
Do
not put the powder in first and then add the water; doing this can make it much
harder to mix with the water. If putting
Triple C into the drinking water, all other sources of water need to be
removed.
Triple
C Antibiotic is an ideal “first line” antibiotic where a definite diagnosis is
not available. If the birds fail to respond to the treatment within 3 days
veterinary advice should be obtained.
Although a fast response should be expected if the disease is one susceptible
to this antibiotic, treatment should be continued for 5-7 days.
It
can be used as a preventative for Psittacosis.
In this case the treatment needs to be
continued for 45 days.
Notes:
Triple C Antibiotic Powder will be affected by the presence of calcium in the
diet.
During
treatment remove all Calcium supplements including shell grit and
cuttlefish bone.
At
the completion of the treatment the birds should have their gut flora re-
established using a probiotic
